TPG Speed Test

TPG Speed Test is a tool used to test how fast your internet speed is. It works by connecting to TPG's servers in Sydney and checking the download and upload speeds of your connection.

The results are averaged out, meaning that any bad connections or disconnections won't affect the overall result too much. This means that if you get disconnected when running this test it shouldn't be taken into account as "bad" but rather as a consequence of poor signals from the server .

This program was developed for Windows XP/2000/2003 operating systems, although there is no reason why it won't work under Linux using Wine (a free translation layer) or similar software. You also need an up-to date browser such as Firefox 3+ or IE 7+ installed.

How to run this test:

1. Download the TPG Speed Test at http://www.tpg.com.au/speedtest/ , extract and then double click on "TPGSpeedTest". A small window will appear with a progress bar and an address box for you to type in (see picture).

2. Type in: http://syd-a01.speedtestcustom.com/ or if it doesn't work try this one: http://syd-b01.speedtestcustom.com . If still does not work, follow these instructions

-Hit 'ALT' key, select Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN Settings...   --> Uncheck 'Use a proxy server'.                -Now go back and try http://syd-a01.speedtestcustom.com/ or if it doesn't work try this one: http://syd-b01.speedtestcustom.com .

3. A new window will appear with the results of your speed test, which you can use to compare against another connection (see picture). It also shows your ping to the servers in Sydney, which represents how fast you receive data from them (lower is better). You should aim for less then 150ms in order to have good download speeds.

4. At the top right of this window, there are three buttons "Save", "Copy" and "Reset". The "Save" button will allow you to save your results as a text file, which can be opened later for easy comparison (recommended). The "Copy" button will copy all of your results at once into the clipboard.

The TPG Speed Test is fairly self explanatory, although some features might not be readily apparent; some explanations follow:

-To ping manually type in the address bar 'ping site.com'. This is useful if the test doesn't connect or disconnects mid way through, so you don't need to start over again.

-To run tests on other servers go back to step 1 and enter their addresses instead of http://syd-a01.speedtestcustom.com/ , try http://syd-b01.speedtestcustom.com if that doesn't work (see notes)

-If you would like to see your ping in real time during the test, press the 'F8' key and it will appear above the address box.

You can also see historical data for many of Australia's internet connections at http://www.iinet.net.au/allstats/ , by typing in your address and clicking on "Internet Speedometer".

Just treat this as a guide to what speeds you should be getting with your connection; TPG does not offer any guarantees about their servers or service, so please don't complain if something goes wrong – we've all been there!

Different locations: Note: if the test does not work for you, try using a different server address. Sometimes TPG moves their servers around to avoid too much load on them etc. read more here https://www.charterspeedtest.info/tpg-speed-test/ I am are strict; please do not upload it to other websites or forums without permission from the author (me).
